Brand identity, positioning and direction for renowned Scottish shotgun and rifle makers McKay Brown. Inspired by Scottish and British gunmaking traditions, the McKay Brown team is formed of some of the most respected and skilled craftsmen who have dedicated their lives to the fine art of gunmaking.

The Challenge

Having recently been acquired by the Buchan Group, the McKay Brown brand was refreshed to re-establish their position in the market and usher in a new era of gunmakers.

The Solution

The stripped back identity allows the focus to remain on the craftsmanship of the pieces. The logotype is inspired by the detailed hand engraved typography.

Moving away from conventional, outdated images of game birds alongside rifles, we celebrated the craftsmanship of the guns themselves showing the inner workings and incredible finish. The colour palette takes direct inspiration from the specialist materials used in the gun making process. Paper stocks were chosen to reflect the English checkering pattern found on the finished wooden stocks.
